The students stay is approximately 18 to 24 months. After arrival, each student learns about God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ, followed with the Teen Challenge curriculum that teaches them how to live the Christian life. It includes such studies as forty- nine character qualities as well as numerous other studies. Some of these studies are “Anger and Personal Rights,” “Growing Through Failure,” “God’s Plan for My Life,” “Attitudes,” “Love and Accepting Myself,” as well as many others too numerous to mention here. In addition the students have Computer Class, Music Class, Etiquette Class and Physical Education. Every student learns how to do household chores properly. We purposely keep the student population small, so that each young person can receive individual attention, support, help and love. In addition, we want to make sure that each is challenged to grow spiritually, emotionally, mentally and socially.
Each student must complete 12 contracts involving academic curriculum, Teen Challenge Curriculum, the Re- Entry Phase and an evaluation of overall performance to the satisfaction of the staff and director.
In Etiquette Class, students learn how to dress for the work place or college, proper respect for authority and they learn living skills like shopping for best purchases and discipline to wake up and be on time for work or school.
While at Teen Challenge each student can continue his or her academic education. After adjusting to their new temporary home, each student is tested for grade and comprehension level in each subject. Then the curriculum will be ordered from Accelerated Christian Education. Students who work hard can graduate with a high school diploma (not a GED) in college prep, general studies or vocational studies.
Like any place of learning, it’s not how much time is spent at Teen Challenge, but is completing the assigned work with passing grades and the completion of other assignments to the satisfaction of the staff and director.
After completing the 12 contracts to the satisfaction of the staff and directors as well as finishing the Re-Entry Phase, the student is ready to graduate.
In addition to the hard work, there are times of fun and entertainment. There are organized trips to town for shopping, cookouts around the campfire, horseback riding, as well as hospitality parties with videos and plenty of snacks. Students also benefit on activities night by being able to use the games and equipment for recreation. Trips out of town to visit churches in other parts of New Mexico add to the student's enjoyment.
